Marketing through Instagram

As I was researching for this blog, I came across one of my favorite boutiques, The Nest on Main, on Facebook promoting their Instagram page. They were announcing a trivia contest to be held every Tuesday and Thursday, on Instagram, and winners would receive free shipping, prizes, coupons, etc. This is a great example of Instagram marketing being used.

InstagramThe number one question on a small business owner’s mind is most likely, why bother with another social media site? One compelling fact is, Facebook saw the potential of this increasingly popular site and paid $715 million for it. It currently has 100 million monthly active users; many customers a business could reach.[1]   Instagram is especially useful for companies that are in the following industries: food/beverage, hospitality, entertainment, real estate, fashion, and design. These industries rely heavily on visual aids for their marketing. Major companies have already started to lead the path for small businesses on what to do for Instagram marketing. For examples of Instagram marketing on a large scale, take a look at these brands: American Express, Starbucks, and T.J. Maxx.

The key to Instagram marketing is active posting. The more posts, the more opportunities there are for new customers to view. Posting photos of “behind the scenes” and daily office life helps to humanize a company, making them more appealing and approachable by customers. Brands are taking advantage of Instagram by promoting sales, promo codes, new products, contests, and events. Instagram easily integrates to other social media sites that they admin, for example: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, and Foursquare. This will help a business save time by sharing on one site and then linking it to their other social media sites. Another important tactic to keep in mind is to keep the customers connected and interacting. The best way to make this happen is by creating contests. Contests are fun for fans and keep them coming back to a brands site.
