In our previous blog “Marketing Stats Shouldn’t be Ignored”, we discussed the importance of marketing stats and how they help businesses determine their effectiveness. One marketing stat site we highly recommend is Google Analytics.
Google Analytics provides valuable data on a company’s website, social media and much more. This program gathers data when people visit a website by using a special tracking code that is inserted into the website code (typically the footer).
Some data that is populated includes number of visits, page views, demographics of website viewers (for instance location), traffic sources, what browsers and operating systems viewers have and keywords searched with (what words people searched on Google to get to the website). All of this data can help a company optimize their website so it not only works best for current viewers but is found on search engines to gain new viewers.
Above is one of many features of Google Analytics – this map shows the locations of people that visited the website. This is very useful in marketing products to other locations as a company can see just how many people visit from countries, states and even cities.
Another useful tool within Google Analytics is it shows all traffic (website visit) sources to a website. This can include search traffic (i.e. from Google.com, Yahoo.com, etc.), Referrals (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), Campaigns (i.e. Google Adwords (PPC), Constant Contact, etc.) and Direct Traffic (those who go directly to the website via the URL). Knowing how people go to a website can show an organization their strong and weak points to better optimize the site.
